Prenatal Vitamins - But Not Pregnant?

I asked my lovely Twitter followers a couple of weeks ago if it was okay to take prenatal vitamins but you're not pregnant (and won't be within the next two years or so.)

Everyone basically said yes! (Thanks for the responses, ladies!:)

I wanted to start taking them to strengthen my nails...biotin just wasn't working for me.

After doing some research - some people say YES, it's totally fine - other's say no...those that say no are from the medical community...

The prenatal vitamins are designed specifically for women who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant or breast-feeding. The vitamins contains, specifically, folic acid, iron, and calcium that is specific for the above needs.

Other medical research says that there has been no indication that prenatal vitamins improve hair, nails, or skin.

Some general practitioners have recommended that women take then - other's don't.

What's your take on prenatals? Save them until you're pregnant/trying to become pregnant?

  2. I always thought it was actually pregnancy that promoted hair and nail growth, not the vitamins.

  3. so funny that you posted this because i was considering this morning to start taking them! i heard from someone that you should start taking them up to a year before you start to get pregnant. not sure if that is true or not.

  4. Goodness, I've been taking them since Feb. 2010. Is that right? Did I get pregnant in 2010? Yep. I can't imagine there would be anything harmful in them. What is different about a woman that is trying to get pregnant and one that isn't? I know plenty of women that try for years. I'm guessing they take the vitamins the whole time.

  5. I took them before I was pregnant, during and still do to this day. My "baby" is two years old. My doc said they're a GREAT multi-vitamin and they are not harmful if you're not pregnant or not trying to get pregnant! I say TAKE EM ;-) I've been on them for about 4 years now and they've been great. I've always had low iron so I was really encouraged to keep with them :-)

  6. I don't think they could harm you. I started taking them a year before trying to conceive. My friends who are waiting another yr or so take them. :)
I started taking the really good ones and I notice my hair and nails are growing faster.

  7. My sister took them because her immune system was low. I started taking them around that time as well, I've been taking them for probably 2-3 years now and John and I didn't start talking about having a baby until last November. I haven't heard anything about the prenatal vitamins improving hair and nails, if that's the case I'm not sure if that really worked for me. My nails seem to be somewhat stronger now, but I'm pregnant so...there you go...lol.
